Winston Churchill's state funeral plans, code-named Operation Hope Not, began taking shape in the 1950s while he was still alive. As the years passed, Churchill outlived several of the distinguished figures originally chosen to serve as his pallbearers. Planners had to revise the arrangements multiple times to replace those men. By the time Churchill died in 1965, the funeral plan had grown into one of the most detailed and frequently updated state funeral operations in British history.
