Barbie Girl Sex Joke Lawsuit

In 1997, Danish pop group Aqua released Barbie Girl, a song that played with sex and kink rather than children’s dolls, and toy maker Mattel sued, claiming it violated the Barbie trademark by portraying her as a “blonde bimbo” and sex object. The case, Mattel, Inc. v. MCA Records, Inc., reached U.S. federal court, where judges ultimately treated the track as a protected parody and rejected Mattel’s attempt to control the song’s depiction of its famous doll.
