The Wide Awakes were a youth organization and marching club that formed shortly before the American Civil War, made up of young men who organized nighttime political parades across the northern United States. They marched in silence to the beat of a drum, eyes fixed straight ahead, dressed in black capes and hats while carrying six-foot torches through city streets.
