Leg Vein Repurposed For Bypass

The longest vein in the human body, the great saphenous vein, runs along the length of the lower limb but is not essential for normal venous circulation in the leg because other veins can take over through collateral circulation. Since removing it does not materially hinder leg blood flow, cardiac surgeons often harvest it and use it as an autotransplant conduit in coronary artery bypass operations, including triple and quadruple bypass surgeries.
