According to accounts cited in his biographies, when Al Capone learned in 1929 that three of his men were plotting against him, he reportedly invited them to a dinner, spent the night drinking with them, then beat them with a baseball bat and ordered his bodyguards to shoot them, a story later questioned by several historians. The legend still proved powerful enough for Hollywood, and Brian De Palma used it as the basis for a brutal dinner scene in The Untouchables (1987), where Robert De Niro's Capone kills a disloyal underling with a bat in front of his crew.
