Hitachi introduced its Magic Wand in the late 1960s as a personal massager, but it became widely known as a powerful vibrator and built a strong following in that role. Uncomfortable with the device’s sexual reputation, Hitachi eventually stopped producing it and distanced the company from the product. Retailers and distributors who saw continued demand worked to convince the manufacturer to bring it back. Production resumed under a new arrangement, with Hitachi’s name removed from the branding and the device sold simply as the Original Magic Wand.
