Disney Hires Ex Convict Allen

In 1994, Disney made an exception to its internal rule against hiring ex-convicts when it cast Tim Allen as Scott Calvin in the Christmas film The Santa Clause. Allen had served time in prison after a 1978 cocaine trafficking conviction, which normally would have disqualified him under the company’s hiring policy. Executives decided to move forward anyway, betting on his popularity from the sitcom Home Improvement.
