Pele White Dog Volcano Omen

In Hawaiian mythology, the fire goddess Pele has a white dog she sends ahead as a warning of impending volcanic eruptions. In 1959, staff at the Mauna Loa observatory repeatedly saw a shy white dog near the station that always ran away from humans. Later that year, Kilauea erupted, matching the old story of Pele’s canine messenger arriving before an outbreak of lava.
