Islamic Houris Versus White Raisins

In Islamic mythology, "houris" is commonly translated as the virgins promised to men after they fulfill their martyrdom, but some scholars argue that this word has been mistranslated and really refers to white raisins. A few modern philologists suggest that the term comes from a Syriac expression for "white grapes" or raisins and that early readers may have understood it as a promise of luxurious fruit rather than heavenly brides. This minority view remains highly controversial, but it shows how a single word can shape very different images of what paradise is supposed to look like.
