Stephen Stucker Airplane AIDS Disclosure

Stephen Stucker, best known for his manic turn as the air traffic controller Johnny in the 1980 comedy Airplane, died in 1986 at the age of 38 from AIDS-related complications. In 1985, he publicly revealed his diagnosis during a televised Christian talk show appearance, making him one of the first popular Hollywood entertainers to openly acknowledge having the then-recently identified disease. His decision to speak out came at a time when AIDS carried intense stigma and misinformation, and many in the industry stayed silent.
