In 1929, Emil Jannings won the first Academy Award for Best Actor for his work in the 1927 film "The Way of All Flesh." That silent drama, produced in the early Hollywood studio era, later became one of the great missing pieces of film history. No known complete copies of The Way of All Flesh survive, which makes Jannings’s Oscar-winning performance the only Academy Award-winning turn that audiences can no longer see in full.
