The Kiss 1896 Film Uproar

In 1896, one of the first films ever shown, The Kiss, depicted a couple kissing on screen for 18 seconds. Early audiences and moral guardians reacted with outrage, and critics described the brief scene as “absolutely disgusting.” At a time when motion pictures were just emerging, this simple on-screen kiss became one of the first cinema scandals.
