A Clockwork Orange X-Rated First

In 1971, Stanley Kubrick’s A Clockwork Orange became the first science fiction film in Hollywood history to be nominated for the Academy Award for Best Picture. The movie went into the 1972 Oscars with an X rating in the United States. That nomination made it not only the first sci-fi film but also the last X-rated film ever to compete for Best Picture. No later Hollywood release with an X rating has returned to that top Oscar category.
