Developed in the 1940s, the B-36 Peacemaker strategic bomber flew with six propeller engines and four jet engines, giving it a range of about 10,000 miles and a service ceiling of 40,000 feet. Its huge wings, the longest wingspan of any combat aircraft, helped support that extraordinary load and endurance. With this power and lift, the B-36 could stay aloft for 40 hours straight without refueling, turning it into a long-range workhorse of early long-distance military aviation.
