New Zealand Castaway Depot Huts

New Zealand Castaway Depot Huts

From 1867, after learning of shipwreck survivors on the Auckland Islands, the New Zealand government began building supply-filled castaway depots on remote subantarctic islands such as Auckland, Campbell, Antipodes, and Bounty. These small huts held emergency rations, clothing, blankets, tools, and other essentials so that future shipwreck survivors could find food and shelter instead of facing starvation. From 1877 to 1927, government steamers regularly patrolled the islands to maintain the depots, restock supplies, and check for castaways.
