At the end of World War I, more than 200 wooden ships came to rest in Mallows Bay in Maryland, where people abandoned and burned them, leaving their hulls in the shallow water. The wrecks stayed in place and over time turned into a tangled graveyard of wooden frames. Today those remains support a thriving ecosystem, and the site is protected as a National Marine Sanctuary.
