On July 25, 1956, the Italian ocean liner Andrea Doria collided with the Swedish liner Stockholm off the coast of Nantucket, Massachusetts, and sank in about 240 feet of water. The wreck lies in cold, dark Atlantic conditions with strong currents and heavy sediment, which makes access difficult even for experienced technical divers. Since recreational divers began visiting the site in the 1960s, more than a dozen have died attempting to penetrate or explore the wreck. These hazards and their challenging depths have earned Andrea Doria the nickname "The Everest of Diving."
