James Riley Sahara Enslavement Memoir

In 1815, U.S. ship captain James Riley wrecked his vessel off the Sahara and was captured, enslaved, and forced to march across the desert with almost no food or water. Riley survived the ordeal and later wrote a detailed eyewitness account of his suffering. Abraham Lincoln would later name Riley’s book as one of the most influential works of his life.
