Second Sight, a company that built retinal implants to give blind patients a form of artificial vision, once implanted its bionic eye systems in people around the world. After the company ran into serious financial difficulties, it stopped supporting some of its devices and scaled back work on its earlier products. As time passed, patients found themselves living with failing and obsolete hardware inside their bodies, with no clear path to repairs or upgrades.
