Fort Knox Display Tanks Recalled

At the onset of the Korean War in 1950, the U.S. Army found itself so unprepared that it lacked enough modern armored vehicles for its forces. To fill the gap, officers ordered World War II–era tanks salvaged from old battlefields and even pulled from display pedestals at Fort Knox. Mechanics refurbished these worn-out machines as quickly as possible so units heading to Korea could field armored support at all.
