William Dean Captured At Taejon

In July 1950, as the North Korean advance raced south, Major General William F. Dean, commander of the U.S. 24th Infantry Division, tried to hold the city of Taejon. The North Koreans pushed forward so fast that they overran his headquarters and forced Dean into frontline fighting, where he personally acted as a tank hunter and helped knock out several enemy tanks. Cut off from his men and fighting on foot, he continued to resist until North Korean forces captured him. Dean became the highest-ranking United Nations prisoner of war taken during the Korean War.
