In June 1953, during the Korean War, American and Greek soldiers held Outpost Harry, a small hilltop position facing Chinese forces near the front lines. Chinese troops launched repeated night assaults, at times outnumbering the defenders by as much as 30 to 1 and pounding the outpost with heavy artillery. Fighting often devolved into brutal hand-to-hand combat in trenches and bunkers as the attackers tried to overrun the position. Despite the overwhelming odds and daily bombardments, the Chinese never succeeded in capturing Outpost Harry.
