During the Korean War, a Mongolian mare named Sergeant Reckless served with the U.S. Marines in Korea as a packhorse, hauling ammunition for frontline units. Marines trained her to learn supply routes so well that she could carry shells by herself without a handler and to seek a bunker or lie down whenever shells started to fall. She served repeatedly under fire, was wounded twice in combat, and received two Purple Hearts along with other medals for her wartime service.
