During the Korean War, future character actor James Hong (Lopan from Big Trouble in Little China) served in the United States Army. In training camp, he kept fellow soldiers entertained with impressions and comedy routines that quickly made him a favorite. The camp general decided his talent did more good on stage than in combat and requested that Hong remain at the camp instead of deploying overseas. Hong was put in charge of live shows for the troops, which turned his military service into an early performance career.
