During the Korean War’s Battle of Inchon in 1950, Kurt Chew-Een Lee served as the first Chinese-American officer in the U.S. Marine Corps. When his unit faced Chinese troops in the dark, he stood up and shouted orders in Mandarin Chinese, pretending to be one of their officers. His bluff confused the opposing soldiers and disrupted their attack, helping his Marines hold their ground.
