Lewis "Chesty" Puller was the most decorated Marine in American history, a senior officer who fought guerrillas in Haiti and Nicaragua and later served with distinction in World War II and the Korean War. During the Korean War, when his unit found itself trapped behind enemy lines, he reportedly told his men, "We have been looking for the enemy for several days now. We have finally found them. We are surrounded. That simplifies our problem of finding these people and killing them." Puller and his men survived.
