After the Vietnam War, the United States flew thousands of orphaned Vietnamese babies to America as part of Operation Babylift, and later there were sometimes efforts to reunite some of them with their families. The U.S. led this evacuation of children from Vietnam during the war for adoption in the United States, Canada, Australia, and several European countries. The very first Operation Babylift flight crashed shortly after takeoff and killed 78 children.
