US Deserters Granted Asylum Sweden

During the Vietnam War, many American soldiers stationed in Japan went AWOL and made their way to Sweden instead of returning to duty. Swedish Prime Minister Olof Palme strongly opposed the war and publicly took a stand against U.S. policy in Vietnam. He promised that Sweden would grant asylum to U.S. deserters, and the country became a haven for those fleeing military service.
