In 1967, the U.S. military launched Operation Popeye, a cloud-seeding mission in Vietnam that aimed to increase rainfall and extend the monsoon season. Military aircrafts sprayed chemicals into clouds to trigger heavier rains over enemy supply routes and later described the effort as "outstandingly successful." After the operation was declassified in 1974, international concern over weather modification led the United Nations to ban the weaponization of weather.
