When your gums recede, the tissue pulls away from the teeth and exposes more of the tooth or its root. Unlike some other tissues in the body, receded gums do not grow back on their own once they have pulled away. Dentists can treat gum recession and help prevent it from getting worse, but they cannot make the original gum tissue regenerate.
