In 1995, surgeon Magdi Yacoub performed a heart transplant on 8-month-old Hannah Clark but chose not to remove her original heart, hoping that if it was given a "time out," it might eventually recover. By 2006, her own heart had regained enough strength that doctors removed the transplanted heart, leaving her original one to function on its own. This made her one of the rare patients whose transplant heart was taken out because her native heart had healed.
