Mussolini Botches Leaning Tower Fix

Benito Mussolini ordered the restoration of the Leaning Tower of Pisa to a vertical position as a showcase for Italy in 1934. In an attempt to stabilize the structure, engineers drilled 361 holes into the foundations and poured 90 cubic meters of concrete into them. Instead of straightening, the tower actually sank further into the soil.
