Athens Lottery Chooses 500 Lawmakers

Each year in ancient Athens, citizens used a lottery to choose 500 people who had to serve in government for one year. During their term, they drafted new laws and oversaw the political process, then sent proposals to the Assembly, where all citizens could vote. This rotating service created a direct democracy in which ordinary Athenians regularly participated in lawmaking.
