Robert Opel Oscar Streaker Murder
In 1974, photographer and activist Robert Opel sprinted naked across the stage at the Academy Awards. He also later ran for U.S. president under the slogan "Not just another crooked dick" and drew on his earlier work as a speechwriter for California governor Ronald Reagan. By 1979 he was running Fey-Way Studios, a gay art gallery in San Francisco that showcased provocative work and doubled as his studio apartment.
On July 7, 1979, two armed men burst into the studio during a gathering, demanded drugs and money, and shot Opel at close range when he tried to throw them out, killing him at age 39.Β Police arrested Robert E. Kelly and Maurice Keenan, who were later convicted, with Kelly receiving 25 years to life and Keenan a life sentence after his death sentence was commuted.
