Indiana Teens' Burglary Gone Wrong

In 2012, five friends in Indiana targeted a house for money, and four of them broke in while 54-year-old homeowner Rodney Scott slept upstairs. Scott woke, fired, and killed 21-year-old Danzele Johnson while wounding another teen. Prosecutors charged the surviving four (Blake Layman, Jose Quiroz, Anthony Sharp, and Levi Sparks) with felony murder, and initial sentences ranged from 50 to 55 years after one plea deal. On appeal, Indiana's Supreme Court vacated the felony-murder convictions and resentenced them for burglary, while Scott faced no charges after authorities ruled he acted in self-defense.
