In 1986, 21-year-old Scott Macklem was shot with a shotgun in a parking lot in Port Huron, Michigan. The motive was unclear, but the prosecutor targeted Fred Freeman, later known as Temujin Kensu, branding him a "ninja killer" and arguing that he chartered a 2 a.m. private plane from more than 400 miles away in Escanaba, Michigan, to commit the murder and return unseen. Despite multiple alibi witnesses in Escanaba and a jailhouse informant who later recanted, a jury convicted Kensu, and the court imposed a life sentence.
