Jay-Z's "Hard Knock Life" Inspiration

When Jay-Z wanted to use the Broadway song "It's the Hard Knock Life" in his 1998 hit, he needed permission from composer Charles Strouse. He wrote Strouse a letter claiming that seeing the musical as a child changed his life, even though it was untrue. Strouse granted clearance anyway, letting Jay-Z release the sample legally.
