Prohibition Leads to Jail Sales

When the 18th Amendment introduced Prohibition in 1920, supporters claimed banning alcohol would eliminate crime across the United States. Some towns believed the promise so strongly that they sold their jails, expecting no further need for them. Instead, organized crime and bootlegging surged in the following years.
