Robert Lawrence Jr.'s Tragic End

In 1967, the U.S. Air Force selected Major Robert Henry Lawrence Jr. as the nation's first Black astronaut. During a press conference, a reporter asked if he would have to sit at the back of the space capsule, referencing segregation. Lawrence died later that year in a plane crash during a training exercise before he could fly to space.
