Between 1945 and 1955, researchers in Lund, Sweden, ran the Vipeholm experiments on patients with intellectual disabilities. Funded by both dentists and the sugar industry, subjects were fed large amounts of sweets, especially sticky toffee, to study how sugar caused tooth decay. The study conclusively linked sugar to cavities, but today they are condemned as grossly unethical human experimentation.
