Since 2002, a farm outside Potwin, Kansas, has been plagued by visits from police, tax investigators, and even lost travelers after being digitally linked to hundreds of millions of devices. A flaw in MaxMind's IP mapping software placed well over 600 million IP addresses at the farm's location because the system defaulted uncertain addresses to the geographical center of the United States. For years, the unsuspecting residents endured false accusations and harassment until the company updated its database to fix the error.
