In the 1980s, doughnut shops across Southern California began packaging pastries in pink-colored boxes instead of the traditional white ones. The switch happened because Westco, a restaurant supply company, had a large surplus of pink-dyed cardboard stock. It was taking up warehouse space, so it became cheaper than plain white boxes. Over time, the pink box became a cultural icon of Southern California's donut scene.
