In 1973, Ilario "Mario" Fabbrini's Papa Fabbrini Family Foods voluntarily recalled and ceremonially buried 29,188 frozen cheese-and-mushroom pizzas after the FDA flagged possible botulism in canned mushrooms supplied to him. Although no illnesses occurred, the mandatory recall and public pressure forced him to dispose of pizzas valued at about $60,000, and the episode sparked major media ridicule and a humiliating "pizza funeral" event attended by Michigan's governor.
