In 1915, the German military issued the Sawback blade bayonet, a substantial 18-inch serrated steel blade designed to saw through wood and underbrush for field fortifications. However, British and French troops viewed it as excessively brutal-often torturing and killing captured German soldiers found with one-prompting a military recall, and while no exact numbers are known, many German soldiers were reportedly executed after being discovered carrying the weapon.
