In 2006, Koua Fong Lee was driving a 1996 Toyota Camry when its accelerator allegedly stuck, causing a crash that killed three people and led to his 2008 conviction and eight-year sentence. Following Toyota's 2009-10 recall addressing stuck accelerator pedals, new evidence of pedal defects prompted a Minnesota judge in 2010 to free Lee after almost 2Β½ years behind bars. Toyota later paid him $750,000 as part of an $11 million settlement.
