Between 1985 and 1987, California serial killer Robert Edward Maury-dubbed the "Tipster Killer"-murdered five women in the Fresno area and anonymously called a crime-tip hotline after each killing, giving directions to the bodies, to collect a reward. He claimed at least $2,000 in reward money by using fake names and addresses but was eventually caught and sentenced to life in prison after DNA evidence linked him to the crimes.
