Tommy Thompson's Gold Coins

Authorities have held (as of 2025) Tommy Thompson in jail since 2015 for contempt of court after he refused to reveal the whereabouts of gold coins he recovered from the 1857 shipwreck of the SS Central America, which he discovered off the coast of South Carolina in 1988. Prosecuted in Ohio, Thompson allegedly recovered thousands of coins worth up to $100 million and now claims he has forgotten where they were hidden.
