Google Payments Keep Firefox Alive

Google Payments Keep Firefox Alive

Google has paid Mozilla more than $400 million a year to remain Firefox's default search engine, with earlier reports estimating the annual deal at $400 million to $450 million. In May 2025, Mozilla CFO Eric Muhlheim testified that the Google agreement supplied roughly 85 percent of Firefox's revenue. He warned that losing the payments would force Mozilla to cut Firefox development, potentially starting a downward spiral that could put the browser out of business. Mozilla had already told its board in December 2024 that losing Google's money posed a serious threat to the organization's survival.
