Bhutanese Citizens Share One Birthday

In Bhutan, a Himalayan country, people traditionally did not celebrate individual birthdays, and many did not even know their actual birth dates. The country's different calendar and collectivist culture made personal birthdays less important. For administrative purposes, everyone becomes another year older on January 1, although younger and urban Bhutanese have increasingly started celebrating their own birthdays.
