Bhutan's Forests Keep Nation Carbon-Negative

Bhutan is the world's only carbon-negative country, meaning it absorbs more carbon dioxide than it releases. Its constitution requires at least 60 percent of the country to remain forested for all time, while forests covered 81 percent of Bhutan when the Climate Council reported the figures in 2017. These forests make this country, which lies entirely in the Himalayas, a net sink for more than four million tons of COβ‚‚ each year, while renewable hydroelectricity exports to India further reduce its carbon balance.
